SEEDFREEDOM DOES: GUERRILLA GARDENING
“Gardens, scholars say, are the first sign of commitment to a community. When people plant corn they are saying, let's stay here. And by their connection to the land, they are connected to one another.”
WHAT IS GUERRILLA GARDENING?
Guerrilla gardening is 'political gardening' primarily practiced by activists and environmentalists who address issues related to land rights and permaculture.
Activists squat land for cultivating plants and crops for the enjoyment of the community.
Some Guerrilla gardening activities take place under the cover of darkness and some openly infront of the community as a way of highlighting the 'Guerrilla gardening movement' but also encouraging them to engage in the activity with the hope of harvesting a sense of 'pride' in your community and environment.
Some communities have even received permission by land owners to create gardens on development land that is yet to be constructed, these have become active open gardens which are enjoyed by the community for local events and awareness days, fitness classes, picnics, parties and get together's, all maintained by a community group who work together planting, watering and weeding to create a fantastic space. (see Lewes Road Community Garden Brighton)
There are opposing views on Guerrilla gardening, some people think it is vandalism, others think it's wonderful and what harm can sharing plants do?
I have a very simple and romantic Idea of 'What Guerrilla Gardening is'.... Beautifying ....
BLOOMS ON LEWES RD CENTRAL RESERVATION BRIGHTON
THE LEWES ROAD CENTRAL RESERVATION WILDFLOWERS
THIS CENTRAL RESERVATION HAS ALWAYS BEEN A FAVORITE OF MINE FOR SEEDBOMBING OVER THE YEARS AND YOU CAN IMAGINE MY DELIGHT WHEN OUR CITY COUNCIL DECIDED TO MAKE A FEATURE OUT OF IT TOO IN 2010 THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF BIODIVERSITY THE COUNCIL PREPARED A SEEDBED AND SOWED MILLIONS OF WILDFLOWER SEEDS WHICH CREATED A BLANKET STRIP OF WILDFLOWERS DOWN THE CENTRE OF THIS BUSY ROAD. THIS ACT OF CONSCIOUS KINDNESS TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND TO THE LANDSCAPE OF THE CITY WAS WELCOMED BY THE COMMUNITY WITH JOVIAL APPRECIATION AND WAS AN ACT WHICH REPRESENTS A COUNCIL THAT CARES ABOUT NATURE AND USING WASTELAND IN A POSITIVE WAY.....
AS THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORED SEEDBOMBING SPOTS I FELT LIKE I WAS IN A SUBCONSCIOUS COLLABORATION WITH THE COUNCIL, LIKE THEY HAD GIVEN ME PERMISSION TO CARRY ON BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE THAT IT IS A SPACE THAT NEEDS SOME FLORAL ATTENTION.
